Job Description

The Mycology Lab Technician will be responsible for:

  • maintaining all lab equipment, instruments, and related apparatus, to include in-house repair, certifications, calibrations and maintenance;
  • develop and obtain approved internal and external testing rates for all mycology lab equipment;
  • develop and manage mycology lab equipment reservation system;
  • train students and employees;
  • provide guidance to employees, undergraduate/graduate students, and interns on equipment, instruments and procedures;
  • develop and oversee all mycology lab safety protocol and training, ensuring they are within the environmental, health and safety guidelines set forth by the college;
  • develop lab manuals that detail operating procedures and outline safety protocols for equipment and processes;
  • organize lab cleanings with students to always maintain clean spaces;
  • communicate with faculty to exchange information on lab activities;
  • maintain materials, methods and records of experimental procedures and evaluations of accumulated data;
  • identify opportunities for lab improvement;
  • conduct service work for outside researchers;
  • lead key initiatives and efforts and manage Mycology Club outreach to campus community (social media, workshops, events, meetings)
  • develop network of professionals & lead Mycology Club activities;
  • recruit undergraduate Mycology Club participants
  • participate in weekly Sustainability Center Crew meetings and log time coordinate tasks in synch with other Center intitiatives

The lab technician will also be tasked with maintaining, propagating, and caring for mushroom cultures at various stages of growth and development. This includes but is not limited to inoculating media with culture, cloning mycelial tissue, creating and preparation of liquid media, substrates, and spawn. Other duties as assigned to manage & document the mycology lab & outdoor mushroom beds/logs care at Prescott College. This position will have primary responsibilities to the Green Mountain Center for Sustainability in Wren, and the hired student must participate in weekly Sustainability Crew meetings.

Job Requirements

Knowledge and experience in standard biological laboratory procedures and safety requirements, or willingness to learn these procedures and standards. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as peer leadership skills necessary. This position requires self-direction, but responsiveness to supervisor & crew communication (emails, group texts, in-person attendance at weekly meetings).
